My salaried job journey is coming to an end, but my freelancing journey is just about to begin.
I’ve registered as a sole trader, set up a business bank account, and secured a loan to get me the tools and equipment I need. The company-issued laptop needs to be returned after all, and my access revoked from work emails.
Securing clients is still a big unknown, but having researched platforms like Upwork and Contra, I’m confident even in a lull month I’ll have enough work to tide me over. While I’m learning game design, the bread-and-butter design skills I have already will pay the way.
It’s an exciting time, but it’s also a rollercoaster of emotions – I still feel responsible for hurting and upsetting my colleagues by choosing a new career path, and I think it’ll always sit there in the back of my mind – but I’m glad they’re proud and excited for me now too.
I keep saying I’ll come and visit, and I will – just once I have enough disposable income for the luxury that is Train travel. £15 for a return, no wonder the kids bunk it.
